I have removed the auto box and everything else but need to remove this aluminium lump and starter ring sure it will come off when this ally lump is off. I have asked on another forum and got one reply saying "whack it and it will come off".
Not to say that isnt true but i have hit it with all my mite with a hide mallet and its budged a mm. Any help would be great as i am stumped at the moment . Should come off with thump. Think there is an adaptor ring on the end of the crank when the flywheel comes off.
Dont forget that you many need to fit a spigot bearing into the end of the crank. No, Don't do it. Keep the auto:banana:. Ill give it another slug tonight. Sorry but that for old men I know Autos are great off road but i have never got on with them personally. Plus i have just bought a gearbox from Ashcrofts to do this. It involves the electrics, reversing light etc. You will need to alter and have rebalanced the propshaft.
Some people will change the back axle, a massive job, to get higher gearing for higher top speed The front brakes will have to be uprated, as per the police versions of the P6B, to handle the extra torque and speed!
The rear cart springs held on only by a flimsy cotton reel type rubber bush, will not be able to handle the extra speed and tension. You will need to uprate the rear shock absorbers as well. It will probably need a rear torsion bar similar to a jaguar. Also the rear brakes would benefit by being changed to the range rover disc brake system, to avoid going round in circles when braking hard. You will also need to use the brake pressure, rear brake compensator valve, from the range rover, to balance the brakes correctly, to stop that happening.
The power steering is too light as it is, so you would need to change it to the ford granada unit to make it less sensitive at higher speeds. In , Land Rover enlarged the Rover V8 to 4, cc The bore remained the same size as the previous 4. The last mass-produced application of the Rover V8 was the Land Rover Discovery, up until the vehicle was redesigned in It is still used by some hand-built sports cars built by some independent manufacturers.
Forget it,the auto works so well and the R manual box is horrible - getting spares for it will be difficult too, manual P38's here in the UK are mostly nasty low spec diesels - which are now well worn. I'm not interested in any way in owning an automatic. I won't even consider a RR if this swap can't be done and I would have the swap parts on-hand before purchasing the truck. I'm surprised that people are ok with the auto. I've driven a couple of RRs and an LR3 and found the transmission to be frustrating at best.
Parts being difficult to find I can deal with. There are plenty of places that have R rebuild kits, so after my initial gathering of parts I shouldn't have to worry about much other than the clutch and flywheel. Thanks again, Brett. Last edited: Jul 29, OK,I'm totally wrong. Shame I've never seen any of them, all the ones I repair are near death, with virtually no synchro action on second and third gear and a heavy clutch. Lets face it the R box has never been any good, the best thing they have done is to give the Ashcroft family something to do.
The term "shift quality" cant really be used in the same sentence as R unless you include something like rubbish. I dont mind manual boxes, but synchromesh is a basic requirement The one I had snapped the output shaft where a rollpin went through.
