Many thanks for the article. I tried SpyMe Tools and it worked fantastically. Was able to easily collapse registry keys for changes that I could easily rule out, and it made it far easier to locate the keys I was looking for. The biggest issue was figuring out how to use the program. Eventually I saved the scan results even though none showed and then ran another scan, again nothing showed, saved those results, and then ran a compare and browsed manually for the files. Aside from that the ui and functionality seems great, my new favourite.
For example… 30 days trial software. X-Regshot 2. The only trick is to change the default language from Russian to English, the flag button in the bottom right on first startup. We link to both versions 1. I want to know if any of these programs would help me to get a. The Regshot Unicode version was a fork of the original Regshot after it was pretty much abandoned for something like 3 or 4 years. Unfortunately the website for it is now gone.
Both InstallWatch Pro and Systracer output the changes between before and after snapshots as reg files. Unfortunately the free version of InstallWatch Pro is limited in that a record of deleted registry keys and values is not available. The full version had this feature, but after much searching using Google I have not been able to locate it.
I scanned InstallSpy 2 with VirusTotal. Can anyone confirm? Thank you so much. I recently performed a complete system restore, only re-installing 8 programs. Now, I have to temporarily install more programs. Hopefully, I will never have to restore my computer again with this. Therefore, you want to make sure that they are the same. If a file is suspect, the typical solution is to recopy from a known good file. This solution may solve the problem, but it prevents you from knowing whether the original file was damaged.
It can be important to determine this, as file damage can indicate an underlying network or system problem. In Microsoft Windows and later, Windiff. To install the support tools, run Setup. To download the Windows NT 4. The Windiff. You can use Windiff. The display shows either a summary of the comparison status of a list of files outline mode or a detailed line-by-line comparison of the files expanded mode. In the Select First File dialog box, locate and then click a file name for the first file in the comparison, and then click Open.
In the Select Second File dialog box, locate and then click a file name for the second file in the comparison, and then click Open. Microsoft included it in the last several Windows resource kits. It comes with Windows as part of Windows Support Tools. Type windiff in the Run dialog box to start it.
After comparing the two files, you see results similar to Figure WinDiff combines both files and highlights the differences in red and yellow.
Differences are relative to the second file, which is why I had you open the second file after the first one. Deleted lines, present in the first file but not in the second, are red. Inserted lines, absent in the first file but present in the second, are yellow. White lines are the same in both files. You also see arrows that indicate whether a line is deleted or inserted.
WinDiff represents changed lines as deletions followed by insertions, as shown in Figure Because WinDiff compares files line by line instead of character by character, you have to judge for yourself whether a deleted line followed by an inserted line represents a changed line of text. Press F8 to move to the next block of differences that WinDiff found; press F7 to move to the previous block of differences. Figure The two columns you see on the left side of the window represent the two files that you're comparing.
These columns are a roadmap of the files' differences. If WinDiff isn't available to you for example, if you're not free to install the support tools on a customer's computer , you can use the comparison features of Word to compare REG files. You might also prefer using Word if you're already familiar with this program and don't want to install or learn how to use WinDiff.
The only drawback is that using Word to compare REG files is often a slow and tedious process because it's not designed for this purpose. This order ensures that Word indicates insertions and deletions properly. Here's how to compare two REG files using Word:.
If the File Conversion dialog box appears, select the encoding method that makes the text in the Preview area readable, and then click OK. If the File Conversion dialog box appears, select the encoding method that makes the text in the Preview area readable. Word displays the results as shown in Figure To see the next change, click the Next button on the Reviewing toolbar.
To see the previous change, click the Previous button. Word displays the results differently depending on the view:. To switch to the normal view, click Normal on the View menu. This is the view shown in Figure By default, insertions are underlined. I like Regshot the most as Registry Comparing software. Its a very basic software, designed just for one job, that is to compare Registry.
Regshot is an open source Registry comparison software for Windows. It is a smart and simple utility, designed just to compare Registry. Say, you want to compare Registry status after making some changes to your PC. You can take the 1st shot before making the changes, then take the 2nd shot afterwards.
It also lets you select an output location to save the comparison log. You will also find a Clear option, which lets you get rid of 1st shot values stored, so that you can start fresh. Not only you can compare Registry files selectively, you can also compare all the drives of your PC.
It lets you take a Baseline snapshot of Registry as a reference point. Now you can take the second snapshot of Registry after some time or after any changes are made to system. The progress of scan is displayed and you can abort the process any time you want. An option to clear temp files is available, so that you can start fresh with getting a baseline state of Registry.
After the scan is complete for step 2, a report with Registry comparison data is saved in TXT format in the folder where the EXE file of this software is located.
